Alternatives to Stairlifts

Kalea offers you great alternatives to conventional stairlifts. Our vertical lift solutions fit inside most staircases and provide you with an excellent opportunity to add real estate value to your property.

Why Buy a Stairlift?

Buying a stairlift is a quick way to improve the accessibility of your home. Stairlifts are easy to fit in most staircases and require very little building work, which means that the investment, in terms of time and money, is relatively small. However, it may be good to know that there are other fast and easy alternatives that will offer you a higher level of comfort and increase the propery value of your home much more than a stairlift ever will. Like, for example, Kalea’s space-saving, ready-made vertical lift solutions that will integrate seamlessly with all kinds of staircases.

Vertical Lifts – A Great Alternative to Stairlifts

Just like stairlifts, Kalea’s vertical platform and cabin lift solutions can be delivered and installed very fast. This is due to the fact that all vertical lifts by Kalea are delivered in ready-made elements and are so space-efficient that lift installation only requires minimal building alterations. However, there are also differences. For example, a vertical lift is slightly bigger than a stairlift, both in terms of size and investment, and it takes a few days more to install, but at the end of the day, it will also add a much greater value to your home than a stairlift.

Only Room for a Stairlift?

If you think that you only have room for a stairlift, think again! The Kalea Kosmos and the Kalea A4 Mini can be installed on a floor space of just 1m2, and, if that is still not small enough, we also offer lifts equipped for outdoor installation.

Vertical Lifts Compared to Stairlifts

Compared to stairlifts, vertical lifts have several advantages that you may not think about, such as:

  • Typically, only family members with mobility impairment will use a stairlift, but everyone uses a vertical lift.
  • A stairlift takes up room in your staircase, but a vertical lift leaves your staircase 100% accessible and obstacle-free.
  • Stairlifts can only transport people, but a vertical lift can also move cleaning equipment, heavy boxes and furniture between floors.
  • For wheelchair users, a stairlift is much harder to get on and off safely than a vertical lift.
  • While a stairlift is often dismantled and taken out before a house sale, a vertical lift is viewed as a great selling point.

What is the Best Alternative to Stairlifts?

What type of lift you should choose instead of a stairlift depends on how much space you have and what you want to use the lift for. If you are looking for a wheelchair-friendly elevator, we recommend a platform size of 900 x 1400 mm (w x d) or bigger, for platform elevators, or a lift car size of 1100 x 1400 mm (w x d), for cabin elevators. However, if you are just looking for a lift to add comfort to your home, you can go as small as you want. Kalea offers you the choice between two types of lifts, that both have their advantages:

Platform Lifts

  • Platform sizes from 600×830 mm – 1100 x 1597 mm (w x d)
  • Rated load: 300 kg (1-3 persons) – 500 kg (Max 5 persons)
  • Indoor or outdoor installation
  • Always comes with a ready-made lift shaft
  • No separate machine room, no lift pit
  • Min headroom (top floor): 2300 mm with standard single-hinged doors
  • Platform controls: hold-to-run*
  • Landing controls: automatic drive

*According to European Standards. For countries outside the EU, automatic drive may be allowed.

Cabin Lifts

  • Cabin sizes from 900 x 950 mm – 1100 x 1700 mm (w x d)
  • Rated load: 300 kg (1-3 persons) – 630 kg ( Max 8 persons)
  • Indoor installation only
  • Available with, or without, a ready-made lift shaft
  • No separate machine room, lift pit of only 100 mm
  • Min headroom (top floor): 2500 mm with standard sliding doors
  • Cabin controls: automatic drive
  • Landing controls: automatic drive
